Since the founding of the Rocky Ford area, education was deemed a significant part of the community. Washington Primary School as we know it today, located at 709 S. 11th Street was built in 1950. The first building which housed the formally named Washington Primary school was built in 1889 and torn down in 1954. Although the building was completed in 1889 it was named as such until 1963 or so. A list of the names was provided to the students and they chose the name, Washington. The school was originally located at 12th and Washington (where Pioneer Nursing Home is today). Prior to that, schooling took place in “the little white school house”. That building still stands in its second location at 407 N. 12th Street. Sounds like the perfect beginning to a wonderful story! Don’t you think so?
